I just want to recommend the tv series "namedni" for russian students. It gives survey of russian cultural history from 1961 to 2003. It will be very good because it enables you to pick up genre references and connotations that russians make between themselves. This is really useful when communicating.

(Its also possible to download from internet at various places, if you prefer that.)
The series is also a set of books, one for each decade. They are however difficult to buy outside of russia.
The tv series is in russian, so some knowledge of language is probably useful as well.
