Recently I watched a You Tube video that sort of ranked the most famous You Tube polyglots:

Who's the best You Tube Polyglot byChristophe Clugston

and as an aside, here is a video that makes fun of some of said polyglots

Youtube polyglots (Moses McCormick, Steve Kaufmann,
Benny

Anyway, to get back on topic, I wasn’t in complete agreement with the first video. Then I thought – wouldn’t it be
fun for
HTLAL to select the best You Tube polyglot? Maybe I’m wrong, but I can’t think of a better judge.

It will probably be controversial, but this is how I’m defining a You Tube polyglot. Regardless of how well they
give lectures in
English, display writing techniques, etc, I want to judge them by their demonstrated ability to speak in at least 5
languages. I
realize that some of the best will be left out because of this. But if they don’t show us, we can’t judge them.

Unfortunately, our polls are limited to 5 choices. So this thread is going to be used to nominate the top 5, and
then I’ll create a
poll. To nominate a candidate, please post their name plus a link to one or more videos that show the candidate
speaking at
least 5 different languages for at least 30 seconds each.

Feel free to add explanations as to why you think your candidate is the best, etc. Members please vote for anyone
you consider
to be in the top 5. Unless something strange happens, I’ll take the top 5 vote counts 10 days from today, May 5,
and create the
new poll.

You can nominate more than one person, but please don’t put more than one in a post, and please don’t repeat
someone
else’s nomination, because that would confuse the voting.

Although this kind of thing can be fun, I don't like ranking polyglots for a few reasons:

1: We are going on very little evidence of people's abilities (just a few minutes over a few videos)
2: Few of us have the ability to evaluate anybody else (I have no idea how good Moses's Hmong is, since I have never learned a single word of the language).
3: Language learning isn't a competition, and knowing you are being "ranked" puts pressure on people that doesn't help them
4: Although the winner may end up feeling good, the "losers" may end of feeling bad, and I would rather encourage other language learners, no matter what their level

Overall. though, I would love more people to make videos. There are loads of language learners out there, and we only ever hear from a few of them. Knowing that they could be put though the polyglot equivalent of "The Hunger Games" isn't going to encourage more people to make videos.
