Dear friends,

I would like to tell you some good news: I am going to learn Japanese! I bought Routledge's Colloquial Japanese just a few minutes ago. That means I will interrupt my Russian studies when I have finished the Langenscheidt course. I am not going to buy Colloquial Russian 2 right now, because I want to try an Asian and Non-Indoeuropean language first. After that, I will probably return to Russian. I think Russian is a very interesting and beautiful language, but I am looking for a more difficult and more exotic language at the moment. Many thanks for everything!

See you!

See you!

Your word order is often unnatural because you tend to put adverbs at the end of a
sentence. It is more often placed before the verb or at the beginning of a sentence. Но
сейчас я ищу более трудный и экзотичный язык. Сейчас я ищу...

If the subject of a special question or a subordinate clause is a noun and the sentence
starts with a question word, the verb is usually put in front of the subject. Я хочу
понять, как работает японский язык.
Вообще, у вас очень хорошо идет русский язык, с вами очень интересно общаться, поэтому
мне бы хотелось, чтобы вы к нему вернулись.

Many thanks, Марк! (I'll answer in English because Russian would take me too long.)

The Langenscheidt course doesn't teach Russian word order. I had to learn it by imitating the dialogues and guessing what might "feel right", but I guess that's not enough to get it right. I have often asked myself what might sound more natural, but unfortunately there are no answers to these questions in my textbook.

Moreover, I have got problems with choosing the right verbal aspect in the infinitive and the future tense. Sometimes, it's obvious which one is right, but sometimes it's really difficult.

I think I'll just dabble a little bit in Japanese and then go on with my Russian studies. I have really gotten to like this language and I will definitely continue studying it in the near future. By the way, I finished the last exercises of my Langenscheidt course yesterday, so I am through with it now. But this log is not closed! I am just taking a little break and will be back soon. You were a great help with questions of Russian grammar, so once again:

FRIDAY, 21 SEPTEMBER 2012

I learned a little bit of Icelandic today. My Japanese book hasn't arrived yet, so I thought it would be best to repeat some things in Icelandic. I read some dialogues in Colloquial Icelandic and also listened to the recordings.

I haven't dealt with Icelandic for a long time, but I understand it better than before. It seems as if Russian has helped me with my Icelandic! Russian is also a difficult language, but it's not in the same family as Icelandic and German. Slavic languages are more difficult for Germans than Germanic languages.

I hope that I'll get my Japanese book tomorrow, because I have already thought of a name for the new log.
