I wish I'd be as grown up about the whole matter as iguanamon is, but I do get infatuated with languages for one reason or another. It's just that this infatuation is not enough to make me more than dabble in the language; if I want to keep on studying it I need to find the human connection, I need to find people I really want to understand and ultimately be able to talk to - or I need to make a commitment I can't break easily. And I need to keep my studies up until I can maintain or improve simply using native materials I enjoy.

I don't know if I'll ever return to Latin. It'd be kind of cool, but I have other priorities at this time in my life. French used to be that kind of language for the longest time, too.

I'm sure a lot of people are not aware of that.

That's bad, especially if they associate the Russian language with Stalin.
Stalin rarely performed public speeches, they were not spoken impressively. He had
certain foreign accent, he had problems with soft р, does not pronounce ы, his vowel
reduction and accentuation
are not Russian either. He certainly knew Russian well, I don't know if he made grammar
mistakes in spontaneous speech.

What I meant to say was that I doubt that most people in Western Europe are aware that Stalin was from Georgia and
that his native language wasn't Russian. They associate Stalin with Russia, the Soviet Union, Communism etc.
However, when people think of Russia or the Russian language, Stalin is probably not the first thing that springs to
mind.

I certainly did not know Stalin was Georgian. And of all places, where else to learn that but on a language forum. Yay internet!

I may have phrased that too weakly. I mean: until I can maintain or improve by only using native materials without having to consult dictionaries, grammars, translations or annotations when I don't feel like it. Which is most of the time, really.

I was unaware of it until after I read Mark's post. Thank you, Mark.
