TAC 2013 Teams
Team Sakura 桜 for Japanese,
Team Romulan for Spanish,
Individual for American Sign Language.

New year, new goals, new adventure!

A Quick Snapshot of Me
I'm a 30-year-old living in San Diego, CA. I currently work for a non-profit that
supports Deaf citizens with various services including interpreting. I recently
graduated with my degree in English-American Sign Language interpreting. Now I want to
improve Spanish (learned from my parents) so I can join the ranks of the preciously few
trilingual interpreters in this major border city. Additionally, I want to start
learning Japanese so I can take my husband (who has been to Japan) on a vacation there.

My Language Goals for 2013
Japanese
2013 Starting Level: Almost from Scratch.
2013 Goal: Beginner, equal to JLTP Level 5.
My husband and I previously took Japanese I class two years ago. I enjoyed it, but I
have forgotten almost everything since then including the kana. I still have the Genki
I textbook (but not the accompanying CD), and I came across the Japanese courses on
Memrise. My husband and I would also like to take a class together.

Spanish
2013 Starting Level: Semi-fluent.
2013 Goal: Start entering A level fluency.
I heard Spanish all around me growing up, but I didn't speak or write it. Now I'm
trying to become a trilingual interpreter professionally, and my choices as a child are
holding me back. I am enrolled in Spanish classes at school (Spanish 4 for the spring)
and plan to obtain my bachelors. I have started writing entries at Lang-8 to work on
my output.

American Sign Language
2013 Starting Level: Semi-fluent.
2013 Goal: Obtain the National Interpreter Certification from the Registry of
Interpreters for the Deaf
.
I started learning ASL years ago when I met Deaf people for the first time. Now I am
working with the Deaf in an administrative position (scheduling assistant), but I need
to pass the national performance exam to start working as an interpreter. I need to
work on input and output, so finding a mentor and practicing with vlogs will be key
here.

HTLAL, TAC 2013, and Me
I recently discovered HTLAL and look forward to the Total Annihilation Challenge.
Unfortunately, it looks like I'm a bit late so unsure if I'll be flying solo or as part
of a team. If anyone reading has any tips, I'm receptive to them!

I have spent the morning brainstorming resources for the three language goals I want to
achieve. I am listing them below so I can have them all in one place for reference.
If anyone reading has suggestions on what to use (or what NOT to use), please let me
know.

This is what I've arrived at so far:
Multiple Languages
    Resources
  • G.L.O.S.S. - Website (recommended by Brun Ugle). Free language lessons from the
    DLI.

  • FSI - Website (recommended by Brun Ugle). Free downloads of old FSI courses where
    the copyright has run out.

  • Lang-8 - Website. I am writing a daily journal in Spanish there. The users have
been very helpful in providing corrections. Hopefully I can add Japanese entries once
I get going. My journal is at: http://lang-8.com/524978/journals

Japanese
    Resources
  • JapanesePod101.com - Website. Audio to learn how to listen to Japanese.

  • Memrise - Website. Offers memory training to learn Japanese.

  • Konnichi wa Japon - YouTube channel. Teaches Japenese using Spanish (!!) so I can
work on both languages at once.

  • Genki - Textbook. Will work to learn how to read/write Japanese, although I do not
have the CD so I can't practice the listening.

Spanish
    Resources
  • Showtime Spanish - Website. Intermediate-level podcasts in Spanish from Radio
Lingua. The hosts are from Spanish, so I hope these podcasts will help me improve
comprehension of the Castillian accent and idioms.

  • Special Education Vocabulary Packet - Handouts. My mother (former Spanish teacher,
now assistant principal) sent me a packet of Spanish vocabulary for the Special
Education setting. I just have to find where I put it at work...

American Sign Language
    Resources
  • DeafMD - Website. Medical terminology explained in ASL. Useful to expand
    vocabulary.

  • ASLized - Website. Stories and Linguistics presented in ASL. Useful to practice
    interpreting from ASL to English.

  • YouTube - Website. I'm still looking for specific channels, but there's lots of
material where I can practice interpreting in both directions.

We are collecting links for resources for Japanese on the thread for team Sakura and will hopefully be getting around to collecting resources for Romance languages on the thread for team Romulan.

Try these two sites also. They have very good resources for several languages:

G.L.O.S.S.Free language lessons from DLI. Multiple languages and levels.
FSIFree downloads of old FSI courses where the copyright has run out.

Wow, thanks for the G.L.O.S.S and FSI resources! I found the FSI course for Spanish
intriguing -- they have a Head Start program for Puerto Rico. Since most Spanish courses
are based on Spain or Latin America, I look forward to seeing a P.R.-based course.

As team leader for both teams, it is my pleasure to welcome you to

“Team Sakura桜” for Japanese

and

"Team Romulan" for Romance languages.

Edit the title of your log to show the team names, then stop by the team threads and introduce yourself.

おはようございます。

I am looking forward to following your progress with Japanese.

A good online Dictionary is Jisho.org, the Denshi Jisho Bookmarklet is good for looking up words.

がんばって!
