Just curious:) In a Russian grammar nazi comm someone posted a Ukrainian guy's CV. He's worked in wholesale trade and has an A2 in Mandarin and also knows some Polish, Bulgarian, Arabic and German. (but his written Russian is just horrible, so people are like, "why doesn't he learn one language well instead?", ugh) I wonder if the A2 certificate means he knows the Chinese characters? I know that with languages that use alphabets reading and writing are normally an essential part of any certificate exam, but are there any serious tests for, say, Mandarin or Japanese that are oral only?
Kinda sad how only a few people realize that although he can't write well even in one of his strongest languages (not sure whether native or not), it doesn't mean he can't have quite decent oral skills for his needs. A2 is a pretty low level. He may know some characters but probably not more than 120-200.
