For French speakers, RFI's Danse des mots is excellent. They release a 20-minute episode daily. It's not at all a hard-boiled linguistics podcast; it's more a soft look at general linguistic phenomena.

I've been listening to this at work and am really enjoying it, thank you! I especially
like how it goes back before the Norman Invasion (that's where many sources start for
English) and explains a bit about other language families as well.

Does anybody know of a good book that discusses these kinds of things?

The Scandinavian countries have a trio of excellent podcasts about general linguistics.

Sweden: Språket
Norway: Språkteigen
Denmark: Sproglaboratoriet

All three have weekly episodes with short interviews or reports followed by listener questions.
