I want to be able to do everything I want :-) There are things I don't want to do in any language, like small talk or discussing philosophy/politics/some other topics.
I also care about grammatical accuracy, especially in morphology. However, I don't mind learning only to understand certain things, like the Italian passato remoto.

You can survive perfectly in italy without "il passato remoto ", especially in the north :-) it is enough to be
able to recognize and understand it .

Not to go too much offtopic, but for example if someone uses passato remoto in ordinary speech, and he/she asks me a question, will it sound awkward if I change it to passato prossimo in my reply?

. Well I would probably switch to passato prossimo as well :-) . It could sound
awkward for southern Italy people , but I really don 't know . Passato prossimo here in everyday life is
pretty much never used , it is something you find in books ,you can hear it on the news or in other formal
contexts, that's pretty much it .
