Fokus Deutsch has an overall depressing atmosphere... I can't stand it.

An absolutely knock out combination that mimics French in Action to a degree is to
combine BBC's Deutsch Plus soap opera with the BBC's older course Deutsch Direkt. The two together give you 40 minutes of video and allow a split between the language used in drama (like the first half of FIA) and native language only explanations of grammar and functions, with some real native interviews thrown in.
