You should read the instruction manual. There are a lot of really useful features that make the whole process much easier.

You can also download Anki language decks made by other users. Though I'm not studying Spanish
myself, I bet there's already a 1000 most common words Spanish deck available for download. As
mentioned before this, you can change Anki's setting to select how many new cards you want to
learn per day, so a 1000 word deck is not so overwhelming.
