as a Spanish and French speaker I understand her pretty well, so I guess it is fairly close to the literary standard. |

Not necessarily, some local features are similar to other languages. And I wasn't doubting her ability to speak standard Italian, seems like most people do. I just wonder if she'd feel comfortable speaking it to her child, or generally what her thoughts are. We may cringe if we listen closely to how we really speak. Most parents consider school and literature important tools for their kids to speak "better". It would be good to know about her expectations for the kid's Italian.
One factor I overlooked is that she already speaks to her spouse in Italian. It may be difficult to change that habit. Also, one parent/one language generally assumes that the parents already know each other's languages, otherwise how would they communicate with each other? Now, in the opposite situation emk managed to learn his wife's native language, French, to a great level. But they're in the USA and he didn't have to worry about passing on his native language, English.
Anyway, in terms of her Italian this means that unless her husband has mastered the local dialect/accent, they probably speak in a fairly standard way, which is good if she wants her kid to speak standard Italian despite going to an English-speaking school.
