Hi All!
I would like to introduce a FREE software program for Windows PC combining
reading and word practice. Initially I had links to the demo's here, I am now working
on uploading the full versions. Keep your eyes on this post as the demo's are
replaced.
Currently it is for Windows PC only. The difference with readlang and bliu-bliu and
other sites is that every word has correctly conjugated and manually added translation.
Most texts also have audio.
Specifics:
* The translation is immediate mouse-over, correct, in context and in
conjugation, if you have to look up 21,000 words (3,000 words on average seven times,
as a wild example), it'll save you hours of study just by efficiency.
* The software calculates the frequency of the words in the text and makes you
practice them less if they're more frequent, so your time is spent more
efficiently.
* Flash cards are made immediately, they also contain a sentence, same here,
this saves you a lot of time if you have a lot of them.
* If you finished a book your progress page shows less new words per chapter in the
next book as it takes into accounts the words from the old book, i.e. it will show
your reading comprehension improving.
* Each book has the equivalent of about 10,000 English words. Some more some
less. The idea is to create books for every language, not just the big ones, once
there's enough people actually buying or donating as well :-). Since we're using
actual translators and people getting paid for audio we need funding.
* The e-books have around 1,200 to 3,000 "unique" words to learn.
The below links are for free full versions on Windows PC. For questions please
contact me, or read the info pages in the software accessible via the Bermuda Word
logo or the pop-ups on the settings page, or reply my post. Check out above .gif
tutorial to see the speed of the mouse-over meanings and the efficient flash card
system. Check out the FAQ below on how to set the software to use flash cards instead
of a standard word-meaning "my words" list:

FAQ (to be edited)
* Why are the number of tests not increasing of my words when I flash card them
correctly or test them correctly: try turn teachermode (owl button) on, or make sure,
if you have spaced repetition turned on, that the words are red or orange in your list
which means you can practice them according to your schedule.
* Why are words that I clicked not added to my word list: by default software will
skip high frequency words, the threshold frequency being the retention factor, so you
can set retention factor higher or turn this skipping off on settings page.

I'm uploading full versions of the software instead of Demo's. Please keep an eye on
the main post for the links of the full e-books :-)
What we're trying to do is create the "perfect" material to learn to understand a
foreign language (reading and listening):
- a lot of it (text)
- immediate availability of correct meanings (no readlang or bliu bliu)
- correct, in context and same conjugation translations
- audio (most of the e-books atm)
- immediate flash card creation
- spaced repetition schedule possible
- read a foreign language from the start
- while gaining lots of vocabulary
- 1,200 to 3,000 unique words per e-book
- (about 400 to 1,500 headwords, so ten thousands of new words you'll comprehend)
Any comments (or help) welcome!

Hello Kees,
Owing to the on-going technical and administrative problems associated with the maintenance of the HTLAL forum, a new/replacement forum was launched last year. Here is the LINK: A Language Learner's Forum. Most of the "more active" members have registered on the new forum and, not surprisingly, that is where most of the discussion now takes place. You might wish to consider doing likewise. I am sure that your post, above, would be welcomed there!

Thanks for the advice!
Actually, I had made an account there a few months ago.
I can't figure out yet how to add my interests (languages and such) to my profile.
I'll give it another try!
I will try to keep this post updated as well, or put a link to the new post in it.

Yeah, the site still has improvements to make but
it's a pretty good site. If you do have any
technical difficulties, make a thread in the
Technical area and it should bring it to the
admins' attention.

It's an anti-spam thing. You need to make a few posts before you can fill in your profile.

Ah, I was starting to suspect something like that! No problem I'll add it once I have
enough posts at my name. Thanks for the info!
