Hello All.
I wasn't even aware that such a venue existed--very interesting.
I began studying Korean at 18, my freshman year in college. I have lived in Korea, first as a student and now as a professor, for about 11 of the last 22 years.
I have no special secrets or techniques. I like the language, apply myself with some measure of seriousness, and go about my life.
Best,
John

WOW. That was quite impressive. Now I've got further inspiration to become better. I started when I was 18 as well (just before turning 19), so perhaps when I'm 40 I will be like that. How long have you considered yourself at that level?
And ona lighter note, I think it's rather entertaining and enriching to hang out with a group of Korean people; I would be interested in hanging out with a group of Caucasians who are all at a native or near-native level of Korean.

I just read about Mr Frankl in a Korean newspaper (중앙일보) a few months ago. He speaks Korean very well, which is the result of active interest and many years of residence in Korea. There are few like him as most foreigners who do rise to the challenge of Korean - and there are few, even here in Korea - end up trapped on a far lower plateau. Korean will humble all but the most persistent, foolhardy, and brave.
Not to toot my own horn, I might add that I am a member of that minuscule group of foreigners who speak Korean with such fluency. I began as a twenty-year-old university student with a year of Korean in America, and I had another two years of instruction in Korea. I was lucky to make friends with some great young Koreans when I first arrived. They incorporated me into their clique, which revolved around, in order of importance, music, tobacco, alcohol, and studying. They didn't 'introduce Korea' to me but expected me, as a student of Korea and her ways, to watch and learn: 'Sink or swim.' From there, I haven't studied but lived the language and culture for over thirteen years now. My biggest struggle is the mastery of 한자 (Chinese characters), which I study at least a few minutes everyday. I take a Korean newspaper (중앙일보) and cruise the internet. I no longer watch TV. My favorite 'study method' is to read books and occasionally journals about Korean history and politics.
Good luck to all who are grappling with the Korean beast!

To you foreigners who have learned Korean to an advanced level and like reading, what's the literature like in Korean? I'm talking more about popular fiction rather than classical literature.

What is the interview about? Is it about martial arts? Is it about his Korean language ability? What is his current age?
I have read complaints on this forum about people who go to Korea and can't get people to speak to them in Korean. Has he experienced this too?
