What is the interview about? Is it about martial arts? Is it about his Korean language ability? What is his current age?

I have read complaints on this forum about people who go to Korea and can't get people to speak to them in Korean. Has he experienced this too?

I find it hard to believe its possible to go to Korea and not be able to find people who will speak Korean. On my own first visit, I spoke no Korean and without the assistance of my wife ( at that time my fiancee ) and her brother I would have been totally stumped to get around such was the rarity of Koreans both willing and able to speak English.

I didn't watch the whole thing, but at least a good portion of the interview is about his language abilities, especially in Korean. Koreans LOVE a westerner who can speak Korean because they are so rare. If you read his post a few up from yours, you can infer that he's about 40, perhaps a bit younger.

The people who told you they can't get people to speak Korean must have been in a strange spot because in the time I spent there, almost everyone would rather speak in Korean. In fact there are some places that remind me of Japanese people, where if you speak absolutely nothing of their language (or not enough to exchange important ideas), they'd rather not waste their time figuring out what you want. But those places are rare and it would usually only happen when the place is busy.

Trouble getting Koreans to speak Korean? I'm curious as to where this place is. Where I live, people just talk to me as though I will understand. And if I do, then they'll be surprised. I notice that old people will not usually inquire first if you can speak Korean or not. They just start talking, but younger people will usually ask first. Or in the case of my students, "Teacher! uhhh, Korean speaking?!"

Indeed. I only ever find Koreans willing to attempt English when they're pretty drunk. Other than that, as LuckyNomad said, people just talk to you as if you're a native speaker; they rarely use simple words or speak slower - which has good points and bad points.

yup. I think this is because, unlike English natives who often encounter non-native English speakers, most Koreans never really encounter non-koreans who speak korean, so never in their lives have they had a reason to slow down their speech. But at least they're not insulting our intelligence.
