fabriciocarraro, Thank you for the encouragement! I guess that's also what I needed to hear :-)
I wonder when I'll be 2-3 year from now ;-)
Solfrid Cristin, OMG, never thought about it like that... Thank you for reminding me to look at the positive.. Appreciate that!! :-)
Teango Whole system, huh? Mmmm... I think I'll take the time now to focus on the pronunciation and proper reading. I'm just anxious to read the novel which I got to try this method.
You are right, I didn't really try step 3, but got stuck in step 2, where I tried listening and reading L2... I was so frustrated with the reading that I took a Disney's book and tried reading that, and failed even there, that I almost started crying...
tarvos I guess you're right. I see that you're studying Hebrew (let me know if you need anything - would love to be able to help someone!!), and I guess that I should stop whining about reading a "simple" language like that - compared to mine...

Patience and effort do the trick. I am two
years into Russian and I have trouble with
literature and fiction. If you don't
understand everything 100% move on. Don't
expect miracles overnight.

You did not understand the topic starter. At first I understood it like you, but then I
saw that he was speaking about pronunciation, not understanding.

Be wary of Russian books for children. I once thought: Why not have an easy read and pick up some children books?
They all went on like this:
Жили-были на одном дворе кот, козёл да баран. Жили они дружно: сена клок - и тот пополам; а коли вилы в бок, так одному коту Баське. Он такой вор и разбойник: где что плохо лежит, туда и глядит. Вот идёт раз котишко-мурлышо, серый лобишко; идёт да таково жалостно плачет. Спрашивают кота козёл да баран: Котик-коток, серенький лобок! О чём ты плачешь, на трёх ногах скачешь...
Holy crap, I do not understand this kind of language, it is full of riming, archaisms, endearing terms and I know not what. Heavy stuff for a beginner.
So choose your first books careful, the label "children" does not mean it is easy.

Марк She, I'm a she! ;-)
Cabaire LOL, that's actually quite comprehensible for me, but yet I can see what you mean :-P
I always take a look at children's English books and think that I can't give them to my English pupils... So yeah, you're totally right, books made for children are not the best place to start.
Actually I'm using Disney books, which are not written only for children.. I guess beginner books would be a better definition..

So, I was wrong, wasn't I?
What do you mean in the first post: you can't pronounce unknown words or you cannot
understand Russian texts?

Yeah, I would like to know that, too. I thought the OP's problem was understanding the relation between spoken and written Russian, in other words: how to pronounce written Russian correctly. Or was I mistaken?

No no no.. Sorry for not being clear enough. :-(
I know that it takes time to UNDERSTAND texts.. I meant that it's hard for me to read - pronounce - the words themselves, like Josquin suggested..
