I agree to start with kanji right away as well. I am not a fan of Hesig. I recommend
starting with Basic Kanji Book. Skritter.com is also a great resource. In general, when
learning vocabulary, learn the kanji as well for those words that are usually written

I agree that one should learn Kana right away, preferably before everything else. As
with Kanji, one should study them in context. That is, the Kanji that you study are the
ones that appear in your grammar lessons. For example, in the first lesson of the Minna
no Nihongo book, one learns how to introduce himself and say his nationality. One of
the Kanji to study in this lesson is hito/jin　人 >> then used as "アメリカ人" and so on.

Like Tanizaki, i am not overly fond of Heisig but I can see the merits of the method.
It's just not for me.

(Off topic: interesting that this post was made exactly a year ago on my birthday ^_^)
