Your nose is always welcome. I seem to be sticking mine into your team's business a lot too.
I agree that we need something recognizable to outsiders as being something distinctly Japanese. But I do hope to avoid committing harakiri this year.
stifa: Shame on you. How can you not know what MIR is?! It was a hugely famous Russian space station. And it only came down about 10 years or so ago, so it's not exactly history. I guess you're just a lot younger than Cristina and I. Maybe it is history to you.

True. They could google it. They'd learn a nice japanese word!
Btw, if I remember well, zen is not exactly the japanese word, but Zazen is. I haven't
checked that out for ages so I can't assure anything, but I'm pretty positive.

Zen is very much associated with Japan though. So I think it could work. It would be a bit of peace to balance all the annihilation.

I was only half my age ten years ago, and my history book had stuff from 2006 in it
when I did Vg3 History in 2010/11.
Googling MIR I kind of recognise it though - I've just forgotten the name of it..

Well I think harakiri is the wrong kind of annihilation, sensei isn't right because we're all students, and as a 30 year old female office worker, samurai just feels plain wrong :)
I'm trying to think of some useful suggestions. But all I can think of is food. Sushi, sashimi, wasabi, tofu, udon, soba, ramen, katsu, daikon, mochi, donburi, yakitori, okonomiyaki. Mmmm, now I'm just making myself hungry.

I'm a nearly 40-year-old female used-to-be-office-worker, and I wouldn't mind getting my sword out and being a samurai or a ninja or something.
Team sushi? At least they would know it was Japanese.
Tamagotchi, I'm not so sure about. I don't know if people even remember them. They might have been in stifa's history book though :D
Pokemon is probably fairly well know around the world, but I think I'd rather be a samurai than a pokemon.
We could be the Karate Kids....

We only called those "datadyr" in Norwegian. :p
And Pokemon isn't automatically reminding me of Japan, even though the island names are
taken from Japanese ilands'.
