Just been hit (again) with a mild irritation. I'm trying to type the kanji for とうとう
(finally) which is 到頭. However, I don't seem to be able to manage to see it anywhere in
the list of possible completions. I'm using Linux Mint, but I've just looked on Windows
XP and it's not there either. This is from one of the memrise courses (N3 or N4, I
forget which) but I've double checked against tangorin.com and the kanji, kana and
meaning are fine.

Is this just one that the Japanese language support gets wrong or is there some trick
I'm missing?

Not sure. It was #9 on my list using Windows IME.

You should be able to add custom words to your IME, although I'm not sure how this works in the version you're using. It doesn't show up in my version of Windows IME either.

However, I don't think I've ever encountered it written in kanji in the wild, at least I haven't noticed it, plus the entry on jisho says it's usually written in kana alone. So I would try not to get too irritated by this one.

In case your preference towards Chinese characters over kana is breathtakingly prevalent, you shall study some Chinese, as it would provide you with near omnipresent Chinese characters. That way you could use the Chinese script over 99% of the time without being perceived as a smarty.

It's going to be a long time before I'm good enough for anyone to believe I'm showing
off rather than simply making a mistake :-)

tangorin.com also says that this one is usually kana, but I missed it.

When it crops up again I'll mark the kanji as "ignore" on memrise and I'll never have
to worry about it again.

Thanks all.

Two weeks into my listening practice with my tutor and I think I need to put in much
more listening work before the N4 test in July. I'm scoring maybe 50% on the work
she's giving me but in exam conditions that's likely toi drop and the pass mark is
somewhere in the 30% region.

I've found the JLPT 3 papers from 1991 - ~2007 and they include not onl;y the audio but
also the audio transcript. So I'm going to start with 1991 and listen + read repeatedly
until I can hear all of it. Then I'll repeat that for 1992 onwaqrds and hopefully by
the time I reach 2007 I'll be scoring a tad higher than 50%.

Apart from listening-whilst-reading and perhaps shadowing (which I'll also try), are
there any other techniques I should look at for improving my listening comprehension?

(I'll also be going through the written papers, tracking my scores as I go, just so I
don't miss any other glaring issues, but right no 聴解 stands out like a sore thumb
...)

I'll track my past paper results in this log.

I've went through the Listening test in detail without trying it "blind", so I have no
result for that.

I tried the written parts of the 1991 JLPT 3 paper: 文字 - 78%, 読解 - 64%.

What is the specific problem you are having with listening? Is it an issue of exam technique?
