So I recently was hooked on GoT (Game of Thrones) and for you lucky few that have yet to
be swallowed up in the series, there are two conlangs in the series: Dothraki, an
Arabesque tongue spoken by the horsemen tribe of the desert, and Valyerian which is used
as a Sanskrit/Latin. The "Common Tongue" is conveniently English.
I was just wondering if any of you all on HTAL had started to study either of them, or
have plans to. I know Klingon and Elvish are two popular conlangs from literature and
film that people learn and while I don't personally have an interest in learning them
myself, I would love to more know about their constructed etymologies, phonetics, etc.

Valar Morghulis ! I really like the series myself, and I'm
almost done reading the books, but learning such a
language? No you won't see me doing that, though High
Valyrian sounds great.
In the books though, these languages aren't at all
represented except for the occasional word here and
there. These languages are actually a sole creature of the
HBO series. It's not at all like in LOTR where the writer
created the language. Still I could see people learning
these, maybe solely to feed their Daenerys fetish ;p.

Valeryian I assume is "valyrian".
But yes, as the previous poster noted, the languages aren't from the pen of mr. Martin but someone HBO hired to make the languages for them. This doesn't make me really want to learn them, especially when they are not in any sort of important role.

Yeah, the Lord of the Rings was essentially an etymology for Quenya and Sindarin. The Game of Thrones conlangs are, on the contrary, quite insignificant. I do love the books, and the show, but I've no desire to learn languages whose only purpose would be to understand (already subtitled) the occasional conversation on the TV show.

I thought only the Dothraki was somehow done. Where can I find the Valyrian?

David Petersen, the creator of both conlangs, has a blog where he talks about updates of his creation.

Like others have pointed out, the languages are a creation of the show. I much prefer the
books to the show, so the languages don't really interest me that much. I would learn
them eventually if it was the other way around though, because I am really obsessed with
the books.
