This is something I criticize myself for when I do it. Losing the meaning is easy to do
while you mouth continues on - but if you can keep your focus you can keep a handle on
the meaning and the pronunciation. At first it's a skill that requires focus, then it
becomes an association. A bit like anything you learn, it's hard at first.

You can't possibly mean what this says. Try shadowing with your native language. Are
you telling me that you're not listening while you do this? Why should it be any
different with an L2?

Listening is a part of shadowing, but shadowing is not a part of listening. I don't see
what's hard to understand about that. I listen, but that doesn't mean that I shadow. I
may vocalise the text later, but I don't see why I should necessarily do it in time with
the recording.

And how I learn grammar? Using examples combined with simple grammatical rules. Using
grammatical overviews and tables I make myself, and use and evaluate on through practice.
Also I do a lot of tutoring, speaking, and occasionally I drill grammar a bit. I am much
more analytical.
