I had seen the old German Teach Yourself by John Adams praised a few times on this
forum. I decided to buy a copy used on Amazon. I am not sure if I got what I wanted.
Inside it says the following:
Quote:
A book of self-instruction in German, based on the work by Sir John Adams,
M.A.,LL.D., completely revised and enlarged by Sydney W. Wells, B.A. and further
revised by E.S. Jenkins, B.A. |

Has anyone ever seen this before in the Teach Yourself series? I don't want to spend
more money buying another, earlier copy, to compare things. I would hope the
differences are just cosmetic in that maybe spellings or whatnot are updated for any
revisions to the language. But, I am not sure. If it is not more-or-less the same as
the original, then it does not have the same ringing endorsement that I read on this
site.
Any input on this? If someone else has an old TY copy definitely by John Adams, I'd be
glad to compare a few random passages or lessons to see if it is the same:
This one has 75 exercises.
Exercise 9 starts with asking you to Translate "I hear the cow." into German.
Lesson 21 is possessive and correlative pronouns.
Thanks for any input! I guess it could still be helpful even if it is not the edition I
expected, but I think it never hurts to ask. I also have a Hugo's Simplified System
German in 3 Months as well. 6th impression in 1975 from a book first printed in 1969.
Any thoughts on it are also welcome.

My copy was printed in 1979, says the same as yours in the front and has 75 exercises. Exercise 6 in mine
starts with turning exercise 5 into the plural. Exercise 9 starts with translate 'I hear the cow'. Lesson 21 is
possessive and correlative pronouns. HTH!

I actually mistyped and everything you mentioned so far lines up exactly with mine!
Have you used this book much? How would you rate it and how helpful it was? Also, are you
new to the language or have you used many other resources as well?

I use it a fair bit for the translations of the sentences but I also found when I didn't quite understand
something like the genitive, the explanation in this book made it seem quite simple when I had struggled with
it previously. I use a wide range of materials including Assimil, the Schritte series and Moment Mal. I like the
Schritte and Moment Mal as they deal more with language as used on a day to day basis for living in the
country rather than for holidays.
I have been learning for about two years but if it was condensed down it is more like six months actively! I
tested at Goethe Institute at A2 recently.
