When I say I mean comprehensible for a person who's been learning for about a month. Of course I realize that I won't understand every word and I will definitely need to use a dictionary, but I'm looking for a newspaper for beginners where I can read one article each morning. I haven't been able to find any.

Try Deutsche Welle. (google it) You will find news, videos and learning materials for learners of German.

I can't speak for the OP, but I think that show is great. I've only been studying German for like 6 hours so I can verify that your friend is correct about the suitability.

The nice thing is that for many of the audio pieces, there is also text, so you can
listen-read if you wish.
Also, the average speed of speaking seems pretty relaxed.
You'd have to explore the site to try to find material that appeals.
