PRI's The World (Public Radio International) had a recent story with an interview of the authors of the new book, The Story of Spanish. This link is to the article and 34 minute podcast. The Canadian authors, Julie Barlow and Jean-Benoît Nadeau, are the husband and wife authors of The Story of French. The podcast of that interview is available at the bottom of the page.
Authors' website also has lots of interesting links.

I believe that the French edition of this book is La grande aventure de la langue française. This is the first actual book I ever read in French, and it was both approachable and interesting. It also took me a couple of months to finish!
