How was L'homme qui plantait des arbres? I read Le hussard sur le toit / The Horseman
on the Roof by Giono. It was a pretty intense novel, about an Italian exile during a
cholera epidemic. I'm curious about his other books.

It is a short, insightful book. It was recommended by emk. Not too hard to follow, just a few new words related to trees and woods. I felt like reading more from the same author, so thanks for the advice.

=======

I'm enjoying the book L'Agence. A bit slow, after all it's paperback and I have to hold it open while I look up the words I don't know. I'm starting to consider if it wouldn't be better to read extensively, not looking up words. I'm still looking up about 5 words each page, and that is slowing down the reading quite a lot, allowing me to check other stuff online. But then it's my first paperback book, it's a non-classic book and I know nothing about the story, it has important contemporary familiar language (even though it's written by a woman and I should beware of learning expressions which are too feminine) and the story seems slow but still interesting. I'll definitely switch to an ebook or even BD after this one, though. I have a goal of 10 books this year which I'm far from achieving if I keep at this rythm. Luckily I'm reading The Little Prince in Georgian/French and I'm sure it counts for my French goal as well.

I had a harder time understanding today's Ghost Whisperer episode. Part of it was due to the fact I watched it at home, with the computer's sound output being transferred to my stereo system, which had a fancy equalization with a bass, subwoofer and all those distortions. Still, I have to get used to that. I'm aware that it's much easier with stereo earphones, but I'm also supposed to watch TV in French while sitting comfortably on a mattress at the living room.

Ghost Whispere's sound ambiance is still quite noisy. It's been a while that I've been watching it and we're speaking of 5 seasons, about 100 episodes left, which might take me the rest of the year. Still, I'm not considering dropping it now. I love the subject and I can't start a limited, strict task and not finish it. i'll see if I can get extra practice by watching movies! What I really need now is voicechatting in French. I wonder if people from the Romance teams are getting any practice.

There's nothing like one day after the other. Today's episode at Ghost Whisperer was crystal-clear. I watched it at the computer with headphones. Besides, I was less tense and so I recovered confidence in my listening skills =D Eager for more!

I'm trying to reach a compromise between intensive and extensive learning. The book is becoming more interesting and some words become familiar. I've realized I look words up even when I can totally tell them from context, maybe expecting to find shades and extended meanings. Today I avoided to do that, and, besides, the online dictionaries seemed to work smoother. I use wordreference and occasionally Google Translator. Linguee would be a final resort, but as I get used it becomes more and more interesting.
