Montmorency has got a very important point in the things I have been preaching, namely that you never should write the 'solution' down to your newfound words immediatly - forcing yourself to carry a translation or explanation around somewhere on your mind while thinking about other things (read words)and then dragging it back from half oblivion is halfway to remembering it forever. But you should write the new foreign word down or mark it where you found it, because otherwise you will forget which word you were trying to remember.
By the way the same applies to 'missing' words, i.e. words you tell yourself to look up later. If you don't jot those words down while you miss them you miss a good opportunity to fill out the holes in your vocabulary.
