I accidentally posted this in the "Links and Internet Resources" section but then realized it would really be better here:
I recently came across this website sprachenlernen24.de that sells language learning programs/ DVDs. It's all in German, but it claims that through its courses it can bring a student up to a C2 level in a given language. I'm not really interested in its claims, actually, but I would like to know if anyone has tried it and how good it works as a resource. Claiming to bringing someone up to a C2 level (with only 5000 words or so) is a tall order, so it makes me a bit suspicious. However, having glanced over some of the pages, it seems like it may cover lots of ground and it has materials for languages that are harder to find material for, including some of my favorites, like Norwegian. The site reminds me of a time where my friend was looking for a German class at the VHS.
He ended up coming to me and asking for help because he had to read German in order to sign up for an A1 class. I was actually kind of funny. This does look interesting. Can't wait to see what people say. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

These suddenly seemed to appear a couple of years ago in the bookshops and libraries. They seem to cover an impressive variety of languages. If the current version is the same, then:
The interface is horrible, compared to the sort of nice lokking sites you see on the internet these days. It actually runs in your browser. The actual course seems like a fairly like a basic "Book based" course, with dialogs and a few grammar tipps, but nothing out of the ordinary. You can print out the vocab as cards (stone age!) There does seem to be some sort of SRS, but I haven't tried it. It requires you to keep a note of a code to access your data (stone age!) It also gives you tips on how to use a paper dictionary! Basically there are 42 dialogs with text and audio. You can "black out" either the dialog or the translation. There are exercises which involve every 5th word being blacked out. The Basis course consists of about 2000 phrases or very short sentences amounting to just over an hour's audio. The Aufbau course has about 2500 shoert sentences anount to 1 hr 40 mins. 2 persons have voted this message useful | |

I read through the link to the German-language reviews above. The first one or two seem supportive, but afterwards everyone universally states that the programs don't run well on the computer, that the translations are a bit off, and that even if it worked, it's still on the expensive side.

I sadly admit that I have purchased it; trying to boost my French. The concept is focused on vocabulary learning by spaced repetition. Text and grammar only play a minor role. Exercises exist but are of poor quality. This is fine for me, as I indeed mainly bought it as a vocabulary trainer. For each session, you can get points, and you can compare your progress with others if going online. That's quite nice, actually, and keeps me motivated.
There are errors in the learning material. If you give a message to customer support, they would give you advice how to correct it in the programming code. That's not so bad, but it would have been better if this software wasn't so error-prone.... It's real downside, however, is the following: there are unbelievably many bugs. I've been having software problems ever since I bought this software, just recently installing the 4th or 5th update, but while past errors are corrected, new ones come up. I feel like being a beta tester, which would be ok if I only would have received 80€ instead of paying them..... In conclusion, I would advise anyone not to purchase this software.
