So Assimil recently came out with a Russian book with an English base, I believe in December 2012.

Has anyone tried it and what do you think? The price is very steep on Amazon (i.e. $185) and I'd like to know if it's
worth it or there are effective alternatives before making such an outlay.

I can't help you with the Russian course.

But $185 is too high. Here are some better prices (this is for the book + CD + MP3 pack):

70€ at Assimil.com.
$42 at Schoenhof's (owned by the US Assimil distributor, I think)

Be sure to triple-check ISBN numbers if you order from Schoenhof's. They have absolutely amazing in-store service in Boston, but their online ordering operation in Skokie can be pretty frustrating.

And make sure you get the book plus recordings! They are sold separately now, which I
learned the hard way with Assimil Spanish. The Assimil website is clear; with others
it's harder to tell.

Thanks, this is really great! What a price difference!

Came out earlier even, in the spring.

Why is it so expensive on Amazon.com? I checked Amazon.fr, and they sell it for 66.40 euros, which with today's exchange rate works out as 86USD.

I'm also curious as to what people have to say about this course. I'm deciding if I should do it with Russian w/o Toil
from the 50s so I get a more modern approach. How do they compare?

The older one, while dated and with bad audio, w/o Toil was longer with more chapters and content. Perhaps download the old one, buy the new With Ease, and use them in conjunction.
