I am currently putting a collection together of BBC language courses from the 1960s and
1970s - in the days when the BBC had a public education remit and had to turn out
courses for adult education it used to produce great courses. In the 60s there were
basic beginners courses (I have French for Beginners and Welsh For Beginners) or on
dialogue stories (Komm Mit, Wie Bitte?, Bonjour Francoise?) and in the 70s on live
interviews with native speakers (Kontakte/Wegweiser/Kein Problem for German,
Ensemble/Sur le Vif/Allez France for French)
I came across this one - Suivez la piste - available on the internet - it was used in
language schools in the 1970s and so has been digitised without having to hunt LPs
down. Having listened to it, its pretty groovy stuff.
Thanks to the people who digitised it:

Yes, those BBC courses were really great.
Two others were "Deutsch Direkt", and later (perhaps in the latter days of BBC courses), "Deutsch Heute".
There were also some courses aimed specifically at school pupils. There was one great one set in Hamburg that I recorded some of on VHS, but
I've forgotten the title for the moment.
And there was a series set in a cafe, with both French and German versions ... that was pretty good. (Maybe there were even more versions?
Possible).
These would be from the 1990s I think.
...
While looking for more info, I came across a forum where people are reminiscing about this kind of thing ... don't know if there are any
useful pointers there ...
old MFL courses

I am surprised at the quality of the older courses - another series I recently got off
ebay is the late 1960s Répondez s'il vous plaît. It was written by Max Bellancourt, the
author of the 19702-1990s Linguaphone course. Unfortunately, the BBC in their wisdom
didn't bring out LPs of the dialogues (which are about a detective investigating a crime
whilst on holiday) but instead published 3 x 45 minute LPs of FSI like drills, similar to
the ones that appear on the Linguaphone programme. Still all good fun and good revision
too.

Hi,
Nice thread.
I am searching (but not terribly hard) for a digitized version of the old BBC Spanish
course called:'Starting Spanish', by Brian Dutton and Angel Garcia de Paredes.
There was a text book and a couple of LP records.
My mother (now 82) used that course to learn conversational Spanish in the 1960's, and
I had a go with it too. She has decided to brush up her (extremely) rusty Spanish
skills, and wants to do that same course again.
(Her theory is that doing the exact same course will restore her previous level of
fluency more quickly and easily than beginning a new course)
The course is available (on LP records) via e-bay, but I imagine that after all these
years the records are badly scratched.
Does anyone here know if there is a digital version on sale somewhere?

It looks interesting, but it seems you have to use it online. You can't download the
text or the audio.
