Even if I’m just going for a couple of days, I’ll nearly always dabble in the language. Here are some of my main reasons,
- It’s courteous to have a few words.
- If you learn the basic pronunciation, locals won’t struggle to understand you referring to places, foods and other items.
- You’ll understand their English better, even if they’ve a strong accent and use their native prosody.
- Any speaking opportunity is better than none.
- The language ends up anchoring, and you can always return to it later. I still remember some Danish from my brief studies three years ago.
- And most importantly, not everyone speaks English.
