Latin remained as the international language of academia for centuries after people stopped actually speaking it. French had a spell as a major lingua-franca and even though it has lost a huge amount of ground to English, French still has a presence at large international events.

Maybe one day Mandarin will dislodge English, but it won't happen in our lifetimes.
