All 3 hours and 10 minutes are from this week. Last week's total was 0.

I decided to not enroll in another semester of classes. They were really useful and helped motivate me to study, but I feel like I got what I was hoping for- that boost of motivation- and won't have time to take them this semester.

Teacher Talk
"I can also say with a high degree of certainty that anyone who chooses not to adopt this Method will be doomed to failure."
"Success in learning a foreign language requires many hundreds of hours of dull, often confusing study. It also demands many thousands of hours of embarrassing, frustrating, and often highly stressful practice of using the language to communicate."
Meh.

Reineke, he does sound rather gloomy but I still agree with him. Language learning isn't always exciting and glamourous... rather, it's glamourous perhaps only in retrospect. You have to put in some time and effort and elbow grease to make progress. Yes, sometimes things happen as if by magic, but at other times you want to throw your hands up and surrender. Hopefully the "embarrassing, frustrating, and stressful" stuff will be limited but at some point everyone bound to feel one of those ways. I like his article quite a bit because it's a good reminder of all these things.

Week 16
Russian: 1 hour, 5 minutes (total: 25 hours, 21 minutes)
*Anki
*long conversation in Russian with the вахта
Recently I've been feeling really good about Russian. All that Anki practice is paying off because I'll hear myself using those new words and phrases in conversation. When I think back to how (poorly) I spoke Russian last November, I feel really proud of how far I've come. The biggest change has come in the last several months after actually beginning to study and not just speak the language on the street. It seems like it would be the opposite- speaking would lead to more improvement than studying- but I was missing a lot of vocab and grammar and my level wasn't high enough to pick it up through conversation. Back then I would literally go weeks without learning a single new word. Now that I do more studying, everything is more interesting overall. It's like- learn it at home, go out and get it reinforced in the real world.
Latin: 30 min (total: 4.5 hours)
*grammar exercises and translation from Latin Made Simple
Spanish: 52 minutes (total: 27 hours, 40 minutes)
*Anki
*podcast
*wrote potential penpal
This week I signed up for italki and checked out Verbling. It's time to find someone to chat with. The idea behind italki (5 min one language, 5 min the other) sounds really appealing.

Week 19
A pretty unspectacular study week and the nightmare that just happened on the east coast is all I can think about. Poor, poor families and communities!
