I'm currently studying Chinese intensively in Taiwan, and will be doing so for the next 1-2 years. However, since I'm thinking about doing my PhD research in Late Imperial Chinese History I'm also interested in learning Manchu down the road. So I'm making this thread for two reasons: the first personal, the second more communal.
First, I figured while I'm in Taiwan I should go ahead and pick up a few books relating to Manjuristics. I know about Gertrude Roth Li's textbook that seems to be the standard textbook at universities in the US, but I'm thinking more along the lines of Chinese-language material. I've heard that 莊吉發 has written a few books on the topic: can anyone comment on their quality? Also if anyone knows of any other books on the subject (Manchu language, culture, or history) that I should pick up while I'm here, I would love to hear about them.
Otherwise, I'm also interested in compiling a list of resources here for the benefit of myself and others who are interested in the language. I've already mentioned Li's textbook. There's also a site maintained by Mark Elliott at Harvard with some info, mostly about courses there (in the East Asian Languages and Cultures department). Many of his links to other sites are broken, unfortunately. There are also Manchu courses available at Indiana University in the department of Central Eurasian Studies and at Princeton in the East Asian studies department. Carla Nappi in the History department at the University of British Columbia is offering a non-credit seminar this academic year, but I don't know if that will continue at UBC in the future.
There is also Echoes of Manchu, a blog about Manchu.
Unfortunately, books on the language seem to be few, far between, and old. Not to mention spread across several languages (mainly Chinese, Japanese, German, Russian, and French). Unfortunately I can't read Japanese or Russian at all, but here are a few in English, French, and German, starting with two recent ones (the rest are from the 19th century):
Handwörterbuch der Mandschusprache by Erich Hauer, Oliver Corff
Manchu grammar by Liliya M. Gorelova
Manuel de la langue mandchoue: grammaire, anthologie & lexique by Charles de Harlez
A Manchu grammar: with analysed texts by Paul Georg von Möllendorff
Élémens de la grammaire mandchoue by Hans Conon von der Gabelentz
The last one is available as a free Google ebook, though I doubt it would serve anyone well for actual study since it was published in 1832. I could be wrong of course, but I'd tend to think a modern book that takes into account recent research on the language would be better to learn from.
Wikibooks also have some Manchu material, though I believe it is all romanized. There are also some relevant videos on Youtube; here are a few:
Conversational Manchu Lesson 1
满文讲义录像 This one, while old and of bad quality, has a link other lectures from the same book.
Qing Culturalism and Manchu Identity Lecture by the late, great Frederic Wakeman
Manjuristics is a growing field, and study of the language is becoming more popular even outside academia now that the language is nearly extinct, so lets get some more material together in this thread! Material in any language is more than welcome; indeed, a specialist in Manjuristics will likely have to learn to read German and Russian in addition to Chinese, Japanese and obviously, Manchu.
So who else is out there learning Manchu?

Here is something that might be of interest to you: http://www.imanchu.com/index.html.
The digital library section has a huge
collection of books (mostly in Mandarin, some in Manchu) about Manchu history and
language.
I am glad someone is interested in learning Manchu! I used to live in Northern China
(Heilongjiang) and my ex-girlfriend was of Manchu descent. While she did not speak the
language, her grand-parents knew some words and expressions. I remember visiting a
Museum in a small village, where a Manchu-speaking family used to recreate some ancient
religious ceremonies. If you happen to go up there, tell me and I might be able to find
the exact place!
But, out of curiosity, once you get a good understanding of the language, how are you
going to find actual material written in Manchu? Is it easy to gain access to those
librairies or museums?

Cool, thanks!
Presumably, if it's for dissertation research I'll be able to arrange access to archives and such through my university. There are large collections of Manchu materials in archives in Taipei, Japan, Beijing, Heilongjiang province, and even some in the Harvard-Yenching Library in Massachusetts.

You can find some Manchu study materials at the Sanmin Book Store on Fu Xing North Road in Taipei sometimes.
Zhuang Jifa used to spend a lot of time in the National Palace Museum library and Manchu archives and teach
classes in Manchu. He'd probably be a good person to talk to because not only does he know where everything is,
he can read it as well.

There is a lot of downloadable manchu books on the BNF site.
I've been learning Manchu on and off for two years, such a beautiful language, so sad it's a dying one.

Does anyone know where to purchase Roth-Li's book in PDF or ePub form?
It's been my experience that books ordered overseas never quite make it to the Mainland.

Thanks for these resources! I am keen to learn more about Manchu - even if they are sometimes not in English, that shouldn't be too much of a problem for us on this site, right? :)
(I'm going all for Mandarin right now but but I'm looking forward to a bit of romance with Manchu soon~)
