I'm currently learning Mandarin and was wondering if there are any television shows in
the Mandarin language with English subtitles to get my feet wet in the language.

Also, I'd like a recommendation of Mandarin musicians to further advance my learning.
Preferably rap, or rock/metal.

Thanks in advance. :)

Hi, if you're in the US you can watch some shows on Hulu, however these are typically drama and romcom - not really my favorite genres. Hulu has also unfortunately increased the length of their commercial breaks which is a drag. Some titles are Palace, Office Girls, The Fierce Wife, among others. These are all subtitled in English.

My family don't subscribe to specialty channels on cable or satellite due to cost. My sister gets all kinds of
shows from tudou.com (土豆网)

I do get a lot of free shows online. 1 of my favorite is an old comedy show from Singapore: "Liang Xi Mei"
the actor (man) on the set who played the role of a mother. The name of the show: "搞笑行动" (gao-xiao
xing-dong). Every short episode features just 1 theme and the key word or phrase would be used in all
sorts of different context so you learn a lot of vocabulary in 1 show.

There are other mini-series I've come across online from Singapore in Chinese that has English subtitles.
The most recent is called: 跑吧孩子 pao-ba hai-zi "Homerun" (or the literal translation: Run, Kid) starting
from Part1 up to Part11 free on 优酷 youku.com. The other mini-series I liked was: 荒岛冒险记 huan-dau
mou-xian-ji "Stranded" sort of like "Lord of the Flies" with a Chinese twist.

My favorite cartoon is: "小耳朵图图" xiao-er-duo Tutu. A little boy with the nickname Tutu with small ears.
A cartoon sitcom sort of like: "Family Guy". Most of the time the kid is just acting his age but comes up
with all sorts of wisecrack answers that are funny.

As you know Singapore uses simplified characters like Mainland China. Most Chinese shows in Mandarin
comes with Chinese subtitles for speakers of other dialects like Cantonese. You can browse in tudou.com
or youku.com. They probably has some.

My Chinese isn't perfect but in the upper-intermediate level. The shows on the list are for family
entertainment or kids so the level isn't very high like in a newscast.

Do you like kung fu dramas? There are loads of them availible with English fansubs, though the language is going to be pretty old-fashioned/formal and not modern colloquial. Still, if you're into it you can get lots of material.

Mandarin music is famous for being unlistentoable by western ears. I've found very little tolerable music. I enjoy this rap song and the songs by 谢天笑. Are those to your liking?

Chun Qiu, the only tolerable Chinese metal band I`ve ever found.

As for TV, best of luck...There are lots of great things about Chinese culture, but the quality of television programming is absolutely abysmal compared to English language material.

Take a look at www.viki.com for some Mandarin programs with English subtitles.
To help get you started with cartoons....

Sa DingDing sings quite a few songs in Mandarin (and Sanskrit, Tibetan and her own conlang) I like listening to her.

I like the metal band fu xi they are not too heavy and tend to blend tradtional chinese instruments with modern metal to create a unique sound.
