Hi. I decided to start a learning log to track my progress as I intend to get as
serious as my work schedule will allow, when it comes to developing a better tongue in
my target language.

Background:
I’ve been flirting with Spanish since January (New Year’s
resolution).

For the first few months I clumsily tried to search and get through
whatever material I could find (a few charity shop beginner’s books, Coffee Break
Spanish podcasts).

Then around April I stumbled across Pimsleur. I finished it at the
beginning of August and I’ve spent the last few weeks reviewing Pimsleur II and III
again and I’m midway through Pimsleur III which I hope to be done with by next week.

Method:
FSI platiquemos - 1 unit per week minimum. Slow and steady to ensure the "over-
learning" technique used by FSI does the job.

Grammar textbooks to supplement any gaps.

Regular conversations with Spanish natives.

****EDIT****
Goal:
Full comprehension of most of the language by the end of next year. By
this the ability to talk about a wide range of subjects with speed and be able to speak
and understand Spanish without needing to translate things in my head.

Best of luck! I've just started Platiquemos as well. Having done just over half of Assimi'ls Spanish with
Ease in the past, I can say I really like it. I think Platiquemos is more satisfying so far, mostly because it
just has so much more material, so I worry about gaps less (but this is coming from someone who has
only done 3 units as well haha).

Anyway, I'll be following your log enthusiastically! All the best.

Worked through the dialogue for listening part of units 1 and 2. Understood everything so
didn’t bother repeating. Unit 3 was quite easy as well.

Unit 4 looks a little bit more difficult with the preterite tense in there. Couldn’t
work out all the words just listening. Will need to look at the book.

Platiquemos seems to be a lot more difficult than first thought. Much harder than
Pimsleur. I'm on unit 6 and actually managed to mix up some of my "Hay"'s and "Está"'s
due to the need to respond rapidly.

Feel comfortable with a lot of grammar because of the textbooks I've been using - reading
and writing are improving.

Listening and speaking need a lot of work.

I'm right there with you regarding being better at reading and writing than speaking and listening! So far
I'm just listening to lots of Spanish radio and adding a podcast here and there. Are you doing anything to
help with comprehension and/or speaking?
Just finished unit 16, and starting to enjoy it much more than I was before. (I'm still not sure I'm doing it
quite right, though haha!)

JIK, I'm listening to a few podcasts aimed at intermediate speakers, which helps a bit
and I've picked 5 or 6 films with good subtitles which I'm just going to watch over and
over again.

Also speaking Spanish in person about half an hour a day through skype or intercambios.

Unit 7 and 8 weren't too bad after getting to grips with the new vocabulary.

Just started unit 9. Intend to go through it slowly to make sure I get a full grasp of
the present perfect.

You seem to be doing quite well JIK! When's your target to complete the program?

Finished unit 9. Refreshed use of present perfect which was useful.

Haven't really learnt anything new although I have been getting more familiar with the
different word order within Spanish sentences compared to their English counterparts

e.g ¿Va a ser su apartemento como este? (Is your apartment going to be like this one)

Which doesn't really make sense with a direct translation. On to unit 10!
