Another approach while driving, and with audiobooks or podcasts, might be to try
shadowing. It may not be ideal from the shadowing point of view (not walking around
outside, for example), but at least it's a bit more active than simply listening, and you
can easily stop whenever you need to concentrate on the road, and pick it up again a bit
later.

I think it will take a while to get used to, but worth a try.
