Like The Count, I like to count things, and it gives me satisfaction to see the numbers grow. Eg. number of SRS words learned (or attempted), number of mp3s understood (or collected), number of grammar rules learned (or written down).

I love the fact that my personal life, my professional life, and my "hobby" life are carried out in three different
languages. I really enjoy talking to people. I doubt that I'll ever be a polyglot - my long-term goal is C2 in two
languages, plus the 2 languages I grew up with, all of which will take time to maintain - but I love putting time into
learning a language, and being able to see my progress. I love being able to understand what I read!

Having an actual conversations in Chinese without having to resort to English or to my iTouch's English-
Chinese dictionary makes my day.
Sitting at a meeting or formal event and understanding what is being said in Chinese before I hear the
translation puts a smile on my face.

One thing that gives me satisfaction is when I reach the level where I can meaningfully read native material such as newspapers or books. For me language is culture, and as a politically interested person I would not want to rely only on Norwegian and British newspapers or websites to understand what goes on in German for example. When you can go directly to the source language and see what the Germans themselves think and say, you get a totally different perspective on things.
I do also get satisfaction from those moments when, for the first time, I am able to say something to a native and they understand me.

Like most people around here, there are two things that make me feel that all that effort was worth it:
1. Hearing for the first time something that I've read and can now recognize and totally understand, especially if it
is an idiomatic expression.
2. Being able to interject in a conversation an entire sentence that is just perfect for the occasion.

Everything. I enjoy the entire process of learning a language from the moment where I first encounter the verb, declension and writing systems along with some basic vocabulary all the way to the point where I'm reading original literature and listening to newscasts with close to full understanding and beyond. It is quite a peculiar thing language learning. Nothing else I have found dispenses bliss so plentifully and unremittingly as it does.
It is true, we are meant to derive pleasure from learning. I pity those who don't.
