So far the only thing that has given me real satisfaction, at least temporarily, is being mistaken for a native speaker, which has happened on a number of occasions.
That to me is true validation--when I can respond to a spontaneous rapid-fire question, often slurred or mumbled, in person or on the phone, and being able to answer back in colloquial, non-textbook Russian or Armenian without missing a beat.
It is like a natural high for me and it lasts for a couple of days. I haven't reached that level in Farsi but I often daydream about it. Unfortunately I am so fanatical the satisfaction doesn't last for long--there is always room for improvement.

It's definitely the long term progress, looking back on a word I never knew a few days or ever years ago. Two years ago, I knew no German, and seven years ago, no Spanish. Now I watch movies, read news, and surf the internet in both languages.
I'm not nearly where I want to be, but I have the satisfaction of knowing I could still NOT know anything about either of them.
Nothing interests me more than languages, it makes me happy to curl up with a book, watch a movie, or listen to music in a different language. Even though I'm an Engineer, I know the one thing I love and am good at is languages.
There is nothing more satisfying than knowing something today that you didn't know yesterday!

What gives me satisfaction is being able to access a whole world that I previously didn't know existed. I can speak to
people in a language that goes straight to their hearts, access a wide range of media with a unique brand of humor,
and read moving and intelligent texts that would otherwise be completely inaccessible to me.
It's an exhilarating feeling in a lot of ways. Sort of like hiking up a mountain and, bit by bit, seeing more and more
of a beautiful vista.
I also enjoy learning how the language functions as a self-contained system. Spotting connections between words in
Dutch, or instantly getting how a new expression works, makes me very happy.
