Can language learning be rushed ?

There is a natural process to learning a language. Like learning to play piano in the beginning you have to master
all sorts of techniques, reading music, etc. Once you get through the basics, learning becomes faster. The hardest
part is to get through the fundamentals in order for your learning curve will go up.

If you are learning a language from the comfort of your own living room going through textbooks, even with aid
of audio and visual material the learning is mostly passive. If you are with people in a social setting or move to a
country where a language is spoken, learning becomes more active. You don't actually feel you are pushing
yourself to remember words & phrases as much because you are constantly using them.

Personally relying on textbook is just too tedious and often you don't get pass the fundamentals. If you can book
a language course that focus on conversation in a group setting (as in French immersion), your language skills
would improve faster.
