Hello everyone so I have been living in working in china for a some time now and I think it is time for me to learn the language. I think I am pretty invested in china and I really want to know what's going on around me and be able to talk to people without my wife's help . I have Assimil Chinese with ease 1&2 and Chinese pod along with anki and remember simplified hanzi book 1. so starting tomorrow morning on my way to work I am going to start anki decks and the assimil along with the podcast. than on my lunch break I am going to have my wife help me for a hour and when I come home after work study for a few more hours . I have never tried to learn Chinese before so I think keeping this log can help motivate me to stay on course and to get info and help from people who have already started learning Chinese . please any info on learning Chinese in china would be very helpful thanks guys talk to you soon with a update.

Ok so I'm on lesson 5 of Assimil listing to Chinese pod the bus and subway. I really like chines pod it a awesome pod cast. Also I am doing my anki decks on the bus and subway and before bed . I have also start studying Hanzi. and my wife showed me a show a few months ago called journey to the west so I went to the tech center and bought the whole 20 dvd set and start watching that . The only problem with this show is it is from 1986 and there are no subtitles . But I still like the show. Also bought a few new movies all Chinese with Chinese and English subs. And on the way home for work yesterday I stopped by a little shop to pick up some notebooks and found some native books for little kids to write Chinese characters from pinyin. I was able to talk to my mother in-law in short phrases it felt good . Other than that I am just studying and open to suggestions.

Welcome to HTLAL! Since you say you're open to suggestions, I'll recommend you to take a look at my ChinesePod method. It took me to a conversational level in a fun and efficient way. You might not use it as written, or use ChinesePod at all, but who knows, there might be a tip or two in there that could be useful to you.

Good luck with your studies!
