Hi everyone!

I'm a new member here. You can click on my profile to see more about my language-
learning history, but suffice it to say, I'm not new to it. I'm now learning Thai as a
6th language.

I will be writing about some of work and progress in studying Thai here.

My tools & methods

  • Teach Yourself Thai course with 2 CDs
  • Movies, music, and other media (mostly accessed via youtube)
  • Mnemosyne
  • A university in my city has a Thai cultural club - I've gone to one of their
events and hope to go to more.
  • Some bilingual (Eng/Thai and JP/Thai) books (which I'll save for when I'm a
    bit more advanced.

As of right now (November 10, 2013), I've just finished lesson 3 of the TYT course and
I've watched one Japanese anime series (which I've seen before in Japanese) dubbed into
Thai.

Number of Mnemosyne entries [11-10-2013]:140

Will be posting more soon.

Oh, I should also mention: I will probably be going to Chiang Mai in May 2014. So
although I'm thinking long-term, I would also like to be at a solid intermediate by then.

Why Thai?

I've been interested in East Asian and Southeast Asian culture for a while now.
Originally, I was only interested in Japan and Japanese culture, but this expanded over
time.

I first became interested in Thai several years ago. I can't remember if there was a
particular incident that set it off, but I remember that there was a Thai girl who I
became friends/acquaintances with for a while. I discovered the sounds of the Thai
language and Thai cuisine around the same time.

I started thinking of learning Thai around that time, but I felt like I didn't have
good enough reasons to do so. Liking the sound of the language and being vaguely
interested in the culture didn't seem like strong enough reasons, especially since (at
that point) I didn't know if I would ever go to Thailand. There was also the fact that
my Japanese was still shaky then, and I wanted to concentrate on that.

Several months ago, in June, I finally visited Thailand! It was only for a few days,
and I only got to see Bangkok - I was staying there as a kind of stop before going to
Cambodia, which was the "main course" of my trip (so to speak). But it was enough for
me to absolutely fall in love with everything, and to make me want to go back.

So, I'm hoping to go to Chiang Mai in May 2014, if personal circumstances permit. But I
also plan on continuing to learn Thai after that, to an advanced level, with the hope
of being able to visit the country more in the future.

One more thing: when I was in Bangkok, I was stuck in the airport for a while (long
story) and so I went to the bookstore in the airport and bought myself some things to
help me learn Thai:

  • A Thai-English dictionary
  • A tracing book for children to practice writing Thai letters
  • Some Japanese-Thai phrasebooks

I originally started learning Thai back in the summer, but due to some personal events
in my life I had to put it off for a while and I've just started again 2 weeks ago.

Wish me luck!

Hi doubleUelle, welcome to HTLAL! Just in case you haven't come across Catherine's blog yet, go and check it out. In particular the resources section is very comprehensive. There's an increasing number of online and offline resources available, making learning Thai easier and more fun than ever :) All the best for your studies!

Hi Bakunin!

Yes, I have seen the "Women Learn Thai" blog and their resources page (which is very
extensive).

And yes, I must say that in general, there seem to be more resources available for Thai
than what I imagined there would be.

Just out of curiosity, what made you interested in Thai and how did you learn it?

I'm sort of learning it as I go. I still don't actually know all of the letters, though I
know most of the common ones. A bunch of them are introduced in each lesson of "Teach
Yourself Thai" (which is what I'm studying from right now).

There's also this video/method, which I think everyone should check out:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOvIRNmi0fY

Great mnemonics and a fun way to learn the script!

I finished Lesson 4 of TYT last night, and will do Lesson 5 today.

I’ve also been focusing a lot on audio, listening, and getting input, since that was a
huge part of my learning in Japanese and something that I want to be central to my
learning Thai.

I’ve been watching some shows/movies that I’ve seen before (in English or in Japanese),
listening to music (and looking up and SRSing parts of the lyrics), etc.
Some examples:

•     I’ve watched most of the episodes in the ‘Cardcaptor Sakura’ anime series
•     I’ve watched Aladdin 2: The Return of Jaffar.
•     I’ve watched the Thai movie “Yes or No”
•     I’m now on episode 11 in the anime series Death Note
•     Etc

I've been more distracted than I would like to be, given that I'm a full-time
university student and exam season is coming up. To keep myself focused, I think I'll
aim for a bare minimum of 10 Mnemosyne entries per day (ideally closer to 15 or more)
and at least 2 hours of (non-music) audio input.

Number of entries on Mnemosyne [11-15-2013]: 200
