Basically I enjoyed Iversen presenting his paintings and having him commenting on them. But I feel that a youtube channel (even a non-language one) is not an ideal place for display. Even the log here on the language forum seems somehow a more suitable place, except that any posts will soon be lost among thousands of newer posts.

If I were in a similar situation I would probably take stock of and patiently catalog everything I have done, make good copies or photographs of all the material and eventually put everything that may have any worth on a website or blog along with my personal comments.

Afterwards, if I was not too attached to the originals anymore, I'd consider selling them, or some of them, as long as this does not cost me any fees, stress or too much effort. I admit I have no idea if it is merely difficult or all but impossible to find potential buyers for personal paintings.

Regarding afterlife I am more worried about the posts on this forum. As we have seen this summer, everything that is posted here including vintage posts by the most experienced polyglots may sink into nirvana and oblivion any time without warning, and I noticed that even Google reacted by deleting the cashed pages at once. The forum appears to be not archived on archive.org either, so this forum is a palace built on thin ice really.

You are perfect right - this forum could disappear overnight and forever. I have personally kept copies of my Guide to Learning languages and my Multiconfused Log plus a number of (mostly fairly old) messages. That means that I could set up a personal blog with enough of the content to wear out most readers. But I doubt that others have done the same, although some have personal blogs with partly overlapping content. We do live a precarious existence in the digital world. And then I haven't even mentioned the possibility that a solar storm like the one in 1859 could destroy much of our electronic circuitry together with power plants etc.

As for my paintings I have also concluded that Youtube isn't a suitable platform. I may consider some alternative solution, but selling the originals won't be an option.

Apart from that: I have spent the weekend in Copenhagen and on Zeeland, and I chose this weekend because there was a 'Cultural Night' Friday with access to lots of otherwise closed institutions - plus special arrangements at sights like the National Art Museum and the Copenhagen Zoo. Of course this in itself didn't further my language learning (which is the main theme of this forum), but discussing quarks with a real physicists at the Niels Bohr institute and the potential harm done by raw pineapple at the Ministry of Education are quite interesting activities in their own right. And I did study Greek, Russian and Portuguese in the train.

.. and I spent last evening making order in my photos, adding to an old article (see below) and making a travel description for personal use. So in this message I would like to mention a few details from the Cultural Night, and the things I did while travelling to and fro will come in the next one.

My hometown Århus also has its own Cultural Night, but it may become a bit repetitious to visit the same places each year - and with a larger population and all the governmental institutions Copenhagen can of course present a longer program. Unfortunately they happen the same Friday evening, so I had to choose, and here in 2012 I chose Copenhagen.

I started out at the Niels Bohr Institute (an internationally renowned part of the Copenhagen University) at 18 o'clock, where I listened to a lecture about solar storms and had a long discussion with a physicist about the implications of the work at Cern apart from the Higgs particle. The solar storm could even be relevant for language students because something like the Carrington event in 1859 could potentially close down the internet and kill your PC. In 1859 power stations broke down because their copper coils fused, telegraph lines sent nonsense messages without anybody in the sender's chair and there were short circuits all over the place. But in 1859 nobody had satellites, computers and TV (and bank accounts were kept on paper with INK!), so the damage today would be much larger. And could it happen? Of course, but we would get a warning because the most damage pulse of charged particles would travel slower than the speed of light - so we could shut down power stations etc. Could it happen? Well yes, older people in Quebec in Canada may still remember the total blackout cause by a much smaller event in 1989. So it s definitely a possibility.

From Niels Bohr I continued to the Rigshospital (State hospital), where I was told that there are no proteins whatsoever in apples and very little in carrots. Even chocolate bars with marcipan have more proteins. If they weren't so extremely fat they would be better food items than apples.

From there I wen to the 'Statens museum for kunst', where I had a discussion with a restorer about practical implements to keep your hand steady and about stereo pictures - because I noticed that she wore stereo glasses. Actually I once wrote an article ("Stereofoto for amatører") about my stereo photos, and for the lady at the museum I yesterday added a section about my own experiments with 'stereo-fication' of paintings. There are sites on the internet with stereo versions of works by the grand masters, and personally I find that they add a value to the paintings - just as the colored versions of old films are less forbidding than the old black-and-white versions. But the 'extended versions' can't replace the originals, just as a completely reconstructed copy of Stonehenge wouldn't cause you to pull down the original thing.

From there I continued to the Odd Fellow house, which once had the best concert hall in Copenhagen. But alas, it burnt down some years ago.

From there I continued to the Education ministry, which had arranged exhibitions and lectures. I got the chance to ask a dietist why they want me to eat 6 pieces of fruit daily when there is no proteins in the stuff (less than in a chocolate bar with marzipan), and also why they had included raw pineapple in their 'healthy exhibition' when that fruit is notorious for containing enzymes that dissolve human flesh. The lecture I attended there told about the current status in mindreading through brain scanning techniques, where it now it possible to predict which one of a number of pictures a test person is looking at. Likewise, people in 'permanent vegetative state' (irreverently called human vegetables) actually can have brain activities that prove that they think about specific things - for instance activity in the motoric areas of the brain can be initiated by speaking about tennis in the presence of such a patient, even though there is no outwards reactions. Scary! Finally we were told that it is possible to see whether a person is thinking in his/her native language or in a secondary language - but without details, and the fact itself is of course wellknown to everybody here at HTLAL.

And to end this educational experience I visited the zoological garden from 23.15 to midnight.

I hadn't had time to change the books in my bag so I still carried TY Afrikaans and wee Ailice around with me even though I have finished both long ago. But I also had a small Russian dictionary from Berlitz so on the outwards trip I did three hours of Russian wordlists. From Copenhagen to Næstved Sunday I looked through the papers in my bag and found my old texts about the town Kastoria in Northern Greek. I also found an unused printout from the Greek Wikipedia about Gilgamesh, which I'll study when I have time for it. And finally I spent some of the time on the return trip reading a selection of texts from Brazilian homepages, including one about the Zoo in Rio de Janeiro (which I have visited) and others about the museums in Rio (idem) - and afterwards something about Harry Potter. I didn't have translations or a Portuguese dictionary, but it was not a big problem. I knew all but a small handful of words (like "estuque", which apparently is a fruit bowl or bowl for general purposes, and the expression "a época do Barão" - which baron?), and there were a few expressions which I understood, but didn't remember - like "seu nome decorre de.." At least my passive Portuguese seems to be OK despite very little activity in the language since my visit to the Algarve earlier this year. I can read Greek with limited or no use of a dictionary (and translations), whereas my Russian is somewhat more shaky.

Apart from that my bag contains treasures like the June-July issue of a Esperanto magazine, the poetic and prosaic texts in sundry languages which I collected for my ill-fated paintings videos, several articles in Irish and English, one in Icelandic about Mývatn (yes, that one!) and several printouts from a homepage about the Russian town Петрозаводск, which I haven't visited, but my mother has. And presumably Kilroy, who has been everywhere.

I thought I would read Huliganov's introduction to his current website (blogsite/vlogsite) and why he started it:

about Huliganov.tv

Basically he started it to showcase his Youtube videos in a way that categorised them and helped people find their way around them, and also provide a place for expanded comments (by him and viewers/commenters), and articles, pictures, documents, etc.

It made me think of you and your videos. Could you think of doing something similar? (Iversen.tv or whatever).

I've always found with Youtube, for viewing videos for anyone with a large channel, the user interface they provide leaves a lot to be desired (from my point of view, as a viewer). I hate, for example having to "click to load more..." ... horrible interface, IMO).

Anyway, with a blog, suitably categorised, with links to the appropriate videos, you have more control over things than with Youtube alone, and things should be more visible (or as visible as you want them to be) than on here, say.

Well, it's just a thought. It is maybe too soon to close the door on your art videos just yet, and you can make it as language oriented as you want, and of course include other things you are interested in. (Interviews with artists, art experts, scientists, perhaps...? The interview or discussion form can often be more interesting than the monologue form, depending how lucky one is with choice of interviewee of course. Handling the audio side is a bit trickier then, I guess.

(edit for not really related rant about people who organise lectures which are videoed, and omit to make sure that all questioners use a microphone, or/and insist that the speaker paraphrase the question before answering it. It is irritating not being able to hear the question, even if one can guess it from the answer...</rant>).

The problem is that I am so heavily engaged with this log and my other writings at HTLAL that I would have problems finding time for both HTLAL and a new blog- plus the commitments I have to the new website of my travel club - I have promised to move the articles from the old site (the one in my profile) to the new one, and the process only lies dormant right now because the people behind the site have forgotten to give me the ability to transfer travelogues by other members than myself to the new site. But a blog for my paintings and maybe my musical scores might be a possibility because these fall outside the scope of both HTLAL and the homepages of my travel club.
