I find this discussion very interesting. I am a native French speaker living in the UK
and training to be a French and Spanish teacher (my Spanish is not brilliant, but it'll improve, I am sure). I would like to add my point of view and defend the teachers by saying that we don't get to choose how we want to teach. When I was teaching French in the past, I have been following the guidelines, and I have been evaluated by other teachers. I completely disagree with the methods of learning, always based on group activities while several studies proved you focus and learn better alone, always based on the same things, the fact that grammar is neglected because "it discourages" pupils who are never used to it... Etc. I disagree with not teaching grammar, and with "hoping" that grammar will magically appear in the pupils mind, after a few years of studying French. But I teach the way they tell me; I feel I have no choice and no real freedom of teaching my language the way I would feel comfortable with and the way I feel is more efficient. 3 persons have voted this message useful | |

Without wanting to get overtly political, there need never be any shortage of funds for
socially worthwhile projects. For certain things today, there is never a shortage of funding. We all know what these are so I need not be specific. For the rest, it's just a matter of choice and people playing a more active role in making those choices. As far as individual development is concerned, there is no substitute for good parenting, and unfortunately, it cannot be taught: it can only be learned from good examples. Unfortunately, the same is true for bad parenting. The results are clear to see. 2 persons have voted this message useful |
