I know what you mean. I have the Dutch audiobook "Soldaat van Oranje" (A Dutch classic) and an e-book. They could hardly be more different. You'd almost think it was a different book, but I guess a very different version. They are both about the same length, so the audio does not seem to be an abridged version. As you say, very annoying.

So it would be really nice to have some confirmed "sightings" of actual parallel audio/text books.

I've only listened-read (both L2) to Da Vinci code and it matches perfectly.

I have the Dutch Da Vinci Code audiobook (6 CD-ROM abridged version) so I imagine there is no matching abridged paper book version. I don't know if there is an audio unabridged version in Dutch. Probably not.

So basically, in this thread, I guess it is a matter of finding confirmed unabridged audiobooks with a confirmed matching paper book. There must be many.

Yeah I mean the Finnish one. It matches for sure.
I think in general if the publishing house is the same and the design is the same or similar AND there's no word abridged anywhere, it's likely to be the same book.

I have yet to hear a German audiobook that matches the real book. Anything from a paragraph here and there up to whole chapters (!) are missing. Very annoying when the translation/original text is in front of you.

I believe the Tintenherz trilogy matches the real book, and it's very nicely read. The English translation is fairly good as well, though very occasional sentences are missing.

Perhaps it makes sense to have a list of who did the translation for the audiobook and whether or not it is an abreviated version. From there, it's easier to know whether the translation might be expected to be exact or not.

For instance, with the Dan Brown novels where the audiobook doesn't match the newer translation it is because the original translation was poor enough to merit a quick redo. Older works, like say "The Scarlet Letter" or "A Christmas Carol" have been faithfully retranslated by more than one person and that's I think where the more typical frustration comes in. E.G., works in the public domain from which there are several translations that could have been chosen as the basis for the audiobook.

With the information on who did the translation, then the search can be to find the other media, book, or audiobook that matches.
