At school, I bought and carried around pocket dictionaries, as they are cheap and easily portable, and consulted the bigger ones in the school library. I wouldn't say even now that it is a case of one or the other - both have their uses and their disadvantages.

On a more general point about dictionaries, ability to use one at all appears to be a clue for psychologists that your IQ is not very low. I was watching the Democracy Now! satellite channel last year and it mentioned a case of a convicted murderer who was taken off Death Row in Texas because his IQ was deemed to be too low to warrant the death penalty. Atkins vs. Virginia is the relevant court case for this.

Then a psychologist noticed two dictionaries in his cell and wrote a report that put him back on Death Row - one of the dictionaries was a German one, incidentally. However, there was no chair in the cell and apparently the prisoner put one of the dictionaries on top of the other and used them as a seat, not for reading.

If he had been just a little bit brighter he would have chosen another genre

There have been some clever murderers, even mass murderers. The cleverest ones have probably never been caught.

Is that a confession?

Nope. Just an observation. It may be just as well, though, that many murderers and other criminals are stupid, because the police do not exactly have a reputation as rocket scientists.
