(DISCLAIMER: I put "French" as a language only because I cannot choose two, and it
was the first in the alphabet, but this is a German-French log)

This will be the only entry in English for this log.

I have decided to attempt to go through six (6) months (the second half of 2013), in as
close of an full immersion situation as possible. My current language schedule is:

- 4 hours Mandarin in the morning (my language level is A0+ as of June 2013 :) )
- 4-5 hours German four days a week (evenings), French three days a week (evening),
with a fourth French day every third week

In both languages, my current estimated levels are:

C1 solid in Reading
C1 in Listening
B2 solid in Writing (C1 when having time to edit and use research to correct)
B2 in Speaking (in everyday situations somewhat fluent, may breakdown in more complex
subject matter. I still make some surprisingly simple mistakes like "Il" for "elle" in
French, and sometimes forget to use the subjunctive verb when required. In German I
still may mess up with the cases 1 out every 4 times, and sometimes still hesitate of
the gender. I still have some issues with very complex verb heavy sentences)

For the Indo-European languages I do generally:

1. 60-120 minutes audio input (exact amount of time depends on day)
2. 30 minutes vocabulary and dialogue review
3. 30-60 reading input
4. 30 minutes writing (usually corresponding)
5. 30-60 grammar review (not every day but at least once a week)

The times above do not include at least 120 minutes (2 hours) each week conversation. I
attend a 120 minute French conversational class, and two 60 minute German tutoring
conversational sessions with a tutor and a friend of mine who speaks near perfect
German. I also get an extra 2-3 hours of output/input practice every month with monthly
French/German expat meetings.

I want to keep all the above, most especially the conversation hours, which has indeed
helped me A LOT in the last two months. But I want to do two additional things now to
take this push to C1 to overdrive:

1) eliminate English (and Spanish), to the bare minimum in my life from here until
23:59 Dec 31st 2013)
2) THINK in German or French when performing my daily life
3) Write an essay each week in each language over a subject (more on that in a second)
4) Read a very high level entry in French or German in subjects like Space, Biology,
History, Economics, Medicine, etc, to begin a "C2-esque" understanding of vocabulary
and paragraph construction in those languages when writing about academic topics.

The first 2 goals in that list are by far the hardest. But I will try my best.

One thing about the essay writing: I think it would be an interesting experiment if I
write the essays here for everyone to read, and furthermore, that I write them in
real-time, for lack of a better way of expressing it. In other words, I will just "type
away", without doing any corrections of grammar, vocabulary, spelling, or the like. A
sort of "virtual speaking", where once I type something I cannot correct what I wrote
(same as when we speak). This will allow me and others to chart my progress, if I show
any :)

I could also do this and then re-read the essays the next day and then make corrections
and post the corrected version of the essay.

Anyway, this project starts tomorrow, June 24th 2013. The first week or two will be
trial-and-error, to adjust to the new situation and see what works for me or doesn't.

I will not write in English after this, except if or when I edit this initial thread.

Wish me luck, I will need it. Six months virtual immersion here we go, I hope...

CLUES:

I will write here things that I may use to indicate certain things that happen when I
am typing an answer or post here:

...hmm... = this means I could not recall a word or phrase to say what follows
"hmm" at the time I was typing

expression)

Lundi-Mardi: français
Mercredi-Jeudi: allemand
