I'm still having some trouble with liaisons. In my audio example the narrator states "Tu
vas où?" like "Tu va où?" instead of "Tu vaz où?"

Is this a mistake of the narrator or is question inversion a special case where you don't
use liaisons?

Hey all,

So far I've still only logged about 16 hours of French, but it is mostly a refresher so I
am actually learning a lot more than I would have if I had never taken French before. I
would say now that I am able to understand some fairly basic paragraphs at this point.

For the next week I plan on doubling my study time to go in to my first day of classes of
Grad School with 30 hours total of French. Wish me luck!

My understanding is that you can use the liason if you don't pause, but cannot if you do.
The phrase could sound like:

'tu / va / ou'   or 'tu / vasou' but not 'tu / vas / ou'

I'm not sure I've ever heard a French person make a liaison in "tu vas où". I don't know if it's incorrect or if it's just uncommon. Some liaisons are required ("ils ont", "les amis"), some are optional ("je suis allé"), some are forbidden ("et il").

I confirm, there is no liaison in "tu vas où ?".

Nope, no liaison there! ("tu vas où ?")

Here is Canada, there's always a liaison in "Je suis allé" - unless, of course, we say "chu allé", in which case all bets
are off. ;)
