Hello all, I'm streetsofgalway and I'm new to this forum, though I've been involved
with other language learning projects before and I've tried learning lots of languages
(but I'm doing it, like, for real this time). I already have a lot of experience with
Spanish (I'm definitely not fluent but I've held very long conversations in Spanish).
My languages of focus now are Japanese, French, and Arabic, for differing reasons,
though one in common is that I've started trying to learn all three before and gave up.
Anyway, here's my routine right now (any suggestions for improvement are very welcome)
Japanese: Using Genki, which I've found pretty good so far. My original plan was a
chapter per day, but this has proved a little much so it's about half a chapter every
day now. I also used memrise to learn the kana, which I may use for other things in the
future, not sure yet though.
Arabic: Using Teach Yourself, I believe the latest edition but I'm not totally sure,
it's definitely pretty new though. Same with Genki, my original plan was a chapter per
day but I'm doing more like half every day. I've also been watching some Learn Arabic
with Maha videos on youtube, which are good, but terribly organized. I think pretty
soon I'm going to start listening to Arabic news reports, since this strategy helped me
a lot with Spanish, but I'll wait until I can recognize a bit more vocab and such
first.
French: My main resource now is Duolingo, which I like a lot but doesn't go too deep.
I've started Michel Thomas French before, and pretty soon I think I'll return to using
that as well. Personally I'm not as concerned with this one, due to the huge vocab
overlap and previous experience with a Romance language (not that I won't be working
hard on it!)
So anyway, these are my focuses right now. Currently my goal isn't much more than to
finish with the programs I'm using for each one, so any recommendations for further
development would be great. I'm looking forward to logging my progress and interacting
with others who love language! Take care.
