If someone had no particular reason to learn any language apart from English ,but he would simply like to
learn 5 other languages , which languages in your opinion should he absolutely learn?

The ones he or she wants to.
For me they would be
French
Russian
Hebrew
Swedish
Dutch (if you consider that I already know this one, then I would replace it with
Romanian)

I'm sorry but I have a problem with the question. It's going to be terribly difficult to stay motivated studying a language you have no passion for, and if you have no passion for any language it's going to be difficult to learn one let alone five.

Everyone should decide for themselves which languages to study. These are the five I would choose:
Russian, Japanese, Icelandic, Irish, French

This sounds a lot like the thread “So You Want to Learn 5...”
What I posted in 2006 still applies although nowadays I wouldn't object if Finnish replaced German in the list below.

Also for me these five are different every other month, particularly depending on when
someone is speaking something I don't understand. Like on holiday I heard a lot of
Mandarin, and I simply wanted to know Mandarin to figure out what the hell everyone else
was saying.
