Am studying Japanese between 3-4 hours daily, self taught. As with any language, I feel there has to be a core number of words needed for each part of speech. As verbs are so important, what would be a fair number to learn first, before going on.

Basic English is a language that uses only 850 English words. Where the necessary English word is not one of the 850 Basic English words it is translated by a short phrase. Like widow is woman whose husband has died. I once read the Bible in Basic English and it is quite readable.
