French has been changing very quickly since it separeted from other Romance languages, while Italian is conservative. It's obvious that French and Italian differ more than Russian and Polish. It's hard to find any similarity between Italian and French words (if we consider pronunciation, which is how linguist always do), and their morphlogy is comletely different. Few Italian endings exist in French and they do not ressemble the Italian ones. There is a significant structural similarity in terms of grammar, but the material part is almost completely lost. |

Well, as you said, in terms of pronunciation and endings French and Italian are indeed very different, but as far as vocabulary and grammar are concerned, they're very very very similar. Maybe not as similar as Italian and Spanish for instance, but knowing Italian has helped me A LOT when I started learning French, both in terms of grammar (passato prossimo x passé composé, that Portuguese doesn't have. etc.) and vocabulary (encore x ancora, in comparison to ainda x aún from PT x SPA, etc. etc. etc.).

fabriciacarraro, it doesn't deny the fact that Russian and Polish are closer than French
and Italian.

Yes, definitely. I couldn't even say anything about that, since I've never studied Polish.
